About Magnolia Art
Magnolia Artの名は、木蓮（Magnolia）に由来します。
太古から地球に息づき、大きな花を咲かせる木蓮。
その力強さと包み込むような美しさに惹かれ、この名をつけました。
自然の中で感じる感動を、紙を中心とした立体表現へ。
形、色彩、スケール、光と影を通して、空間に新たな景色を生み出します。
作品に出会った瞬間に心が躍り、その空間を味わううちに、心がほどけていく。
日常に癒しと明るい感情をもたらす作品をつくります。
The name Magnolia Art is inspired by the magnolia flower.
Magnolias have flourished on Earth since ancient times, producing large and striking blooms. Drawn to their strength and enveloping beauty, I chose the name Magnolia Art.
I translate the emotions I experience in nature into sculptural forms, primarily using paper.
Through form, colour, scale, light and shadow, I create new landscapes within a space.
At first encounter, the work awakens a sense of wonder. As viewers spend time within the space, the heart gradually begins to soften.
I create works that bring comfort, joy and emotional lightness to everyday life.

千葉県木更津市生まれ、佐賀県唐津市育ち。
幼い頃から紙や粘土を使った工作が好きで、手を動かして何かを形にすることに夢中だった。
大学卒業後は会社員として働くが、デザインの仕事をしたいという思いを捨てきれず退職。
デザインを学ぶため、ニューヨークへ渡る。
渡米から約3カ月後、通っていた学校が突然閉校し、支払った学費も戻らなかった。
先の見えない不安と裏切られたような気持ちから、友人と過ごしていても笑えないほど心が沈んだ。
そんな中、沈んだ気持ちのままニューヨークの街を歩いている時、ふと目に入ったショーウィンドウやダイナミックなモニュメント、街中のアートに心を動かされ、気持ちがすっと軽くなる瞬間があった。
現実は何も変わっていなくても、アートに触れている間は心を覆っていたものが薄れ、
自分の感覚が戻ってくるように感じた。
この体験をきっかけに、日常の中でふと目にした時、心が少し軽くなるような作品を、
自らの手で生み出したいと強く感じた。
2014年に帰国。その後も答えを探し続ける中で、花の世界に関心を持つ。
花が人の心に与える癒しと、紙から花びらを一枚ずつ切り出し、形を整え、重ね合わせていく手仕事の温度。
その二つが、自分の探していた表現と重なり、2015年からペーパーフラワーの制作を始める。
2017年、Magnolia Artを設立。
現在は紙を中心に、作品に応じてさまざまな素材を取り入れながら、
立体作品や空間インスタレーションを制作している。
旅先で出会った自然の景色や街、美術館で心を動かされた体験をもとに、手作業を重ねながら、形、色彩、スケール、光と影によって空間に新たな景色を生み出す。
作品に出会った瞬間に心が躍り、その空間を味わううちに心がほどけていく。
人の中にある喜びや希望が、再び動き出すような作品を目指している。
成田国際空港「NARITA PREMIER LOUNGE」では、東京2020大会に向け、世界各地の国花を紙で表現し、花々で世界地図を描いた約9mにわたる壁面作品とエントランス作品を手がけた。現在も常設展示されている。
東京国立近代美術館内レストラン「ラー・エ・ミクニ」には、3m四方の白いペーパーフラワー作品が常設展示されている。
そのほか、ブランドとのアーティストコラボレーションをはじめ、ラグジュアリーブランドや企業からの依頼で、空間装飾、ウィンドウディスプレイ、店舗イベントへのアーティスト出演、ペーパーフラワーギフトの制作を手がけている。
紙による造形を通じて、文化や国境を越え、人の心が動く瞬間を生み出したい。
SAYUMI FUKUDA
Paper Artist
Born in Kisarazu, Chiba, and raised in Karatsu, Saga, Japan.
From an early age, Sayumi Fukuda loved working with paper and clay and was fascinated by the process of shaping materials by hand.
After graduating from university, she began her career in the corporate world. Unable to let go of her desire to pursue design, she eventually left her job and moved to New York to study.
About three months after arriving, the school she was attending abruptly closed, and her tuition was never refunded. Overwhelmed by uncertainty and a sense of betrayal, she went through a period of such deep sadness that she found it difficult to smile, even when spending time with friends.
During this time, as she walked through the streets of New York, she found herself moved by the city’s window displays, dynamic monuments, and public art. These unexpected encounters brought moments when the weight she was carrying suddenly felt lighter.
Although her circumstances had not changed, experiencing art seemed to lift the veil that had clouded her heart, allowing her to reconnect with herself.
This experience gave her a strong desire to create works that people might encounter unexpectedly in their everyday lives—works that could make them feel a little lighter.
She returned to Japan in 2014 and continued searching for the form her own expression would take. Along the way, she became drawn to the world of flowers.
She discovered a connection between the comfort that flowers bring and the warmth of handcrafting—cutting individual petals from paper, shaping them, and layering them one by one. Together, these elements reflected the form of expression she had been seeking, and in 2015, she began creating paper flowers.
In 2017, she founded Magnolia Art.
Today, she creates sculptural works and spatial installations, working primarily with paper while incorporating a variety of materials according to the concept of each project.
Inspired by natural landscapes, cities encountered on her travels, and moving experiences in museums, she builds each work by hand, creating new landscapes within a space through form, color, scale, light, and shadow.
Her work seeks to create an immediate sense of wonder, followed by a gradual feeling of release as viewers experience the space—awakening the joy and hope that already exist within them.
For the NARITA PREMIER LOUNGE at Narita International Airport, she created national flowers from countries around the world in paper and arranged them into a world map spanning approximately nine meters, along with a separate entrance installation. Commissioned in anticipation of the Tokyo 2020 Games, both works remain on permanent display.
At L’ART ET MIKUNI, a restaurant inside the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, her three-by-three-meter installation of white paper flowers is also on permanent display.
Her practice also encompasses artist collaborations with brands, spatial installations and window displays commissioned by luxury brands and companies, appearances as a featured artist at in-store events, and the creation of custom paper-flower gifts.
Through the art of paper, she aspires to create moments that move people across cultures and borders.

Born in Chiba prefecture and raised in Saga prefecture.
I have loved creating objects from a young age
And in middle school, my teacher suggested choosing an occupation related to design, saying, “please continue drawing in the future as well,” which stuck to my mind
So, I left my Job at an advertisement company that I joined after graduating university and flew to NY to learn design
Through my time at the Arts Student League, a school in NY, I was able to experience Art, show windows, dynamic designs.
Through these experiences, my feelings to create my own works that will make people feel calm and also excited became stronger.
Amidst those times, I met the giant paper flower.
Studied abroad for design in NY, USA and after returning to Japan, studied fresh flowers at Nicolai Bergmann
